Most investors I meet are not afraid of volatility. They are afraid of what volatility does to their judgment. In Frankfurt, where capital is patient but conversations are not, I spend a lot of time walking clients through the same three questions before any allocation decision: How much can we lose without changing our behavior? How quickly can we exit if the thesis breaks? And what macro scenario would make us wrong? These are not technical questions. They are discipline questions. Position sizing is not about maximizing return; it is about surviving the moments when the market tests your conviction. Liquidity is not about having cash; it is about having optionality when others are forced to sell. And volatility is not your enemy—it is the price you pay for exposure to returns that are not available to everyone. Why Market Structure Matters More Than Forecasts I have stopped trying to predict the next quarter. Instead, I focus on how money flows through the system—who is leveraged, who is crowded, where the exit doors are narrow. Market structure tells you more about risk than any economic model. When central banks shift, when credit spreads widen, when retail participation spikes, the structure changes. Your allocation must change with it, not because you have a new forecast, but because the risk landscape has moved. Three Rules I Apply to Every Portfolio Size positions so that a 20% drawdown feels uncomfortable but not existential. If it feels existential, you are too big. Hold at least 10% in instruments that can be sold within a day, even in stress. Liquidity is a feature, not a constraint. Revisit your macro assumptions monthly, not annually. The world does not wait for your quarterly review. Staying Rational When Markets Move Fast Speed is not the same as clarity. In fast markets, the temptation is to react—to cut risk, to chase momentum, to follow the crowd. I have learned to slow down exactly when everything else speeds up. That means having a pre-committed plan for drawdowns, for news events, for gap opens. If you do not decide in advance, you will decide in panic. For the affluent mandates I advise, the goal is not to be the smartest person in the room. It is to be the most prepared. Preparation looks boring. It is checklists, stress tests, and honest conversations about what you do not know. But boring is what protects capital when the market stops being polite. One practical note: if you are reviewing your portfolio and cannot explain, in one sentence, why each position exists, you have a concentration problem, not a return problem. Fix that before you add anything new. Keywords: alternative investments, position sizing, liquidity risk, macro allocation, portfolio discipline, Frankfurt wealth management.
